Jeffrey Griffiths, 35, hanged himself at the prison where there has been a huge rise in the use of New Pyschoactive Substances or legal highs.
The prison's senior operations manager Samantha O'Neil said: "New Psychoactive Substances are rife across the prison.
"They are dreadful drugs - it is frightening to see someone under the influence of NPS.
"People have died and we've had to bring them back."
Griffiths regularly used Spice which is smuggled into jails impregnated onto letters, newspapers and magazines.
The drug, almost impossible to detect in medical tests, can cause paranoia, hallucinations and aggression.
