Retained fireman Dave Price, 30, was called out to reports of a remote smallholding on fire with people trapped inside.
When he got close to the scene Mr Price realised it was the home of his father-in-law David Cuthbertson, 68, who lived there with eight young children.
Family friend Mary Ann Gilchrist, 68, said: "What I find so horrific is that one of the people who responded was his son-in-law, a local fireman.
"It must have been the most dreadful thing to get there and realise it was his own family members."
Fireman Mr Price is today comforting his wife Pia, 28, who lost her father and five half brothers and sisters in the blaze.
Police confirmed six people, including five children aged 4 to 11, died when fire ripped through the farmhouse at Llangammarch Wells, Powys, Mid Wales,
Chef Mrs Gilchrist, best friend of Mr Cuthbertson's second wife Jenny, said the community was in "total shock" at the tragedy. « less
